The US provides numerous work opportunities to professionals all over the world. However, landing that dream job in America is only one step in the process. You’ll also need a visa to enter, work and live in the US for the duration.
Now, there are different kinds of visas. And deciding which is the right one depends on who you are, where you’re from, your intention for coming to the US, and, of course, how long you plan to be in the country.
That said, one of the most utilized visas is the TN visa. The TN visa is not only cheap but also quick and allows you to stay in the country indefinitely (with renewals).
But, to get it, you need to fulfill these four TN visa requirements:
1. Be a Canadian or Mexican Citizen
The TN Visa, or Trade NAFTA in full, is only open to citizens of Canada and Mexico. That’s because it was created under the North American Free Trade Agreement, an arrangement among just the three North American countries. So, to actually be considered, you have to provide proof of citizenship. That is a valid Canadian or Mexican passport.
2. Be a NAFTA Professional with Relevant Qualifications
Aside from being a citizen of either country, you must also be in a profession that falls under the NAFTA specifications. That’s right; there is a list of careers that the TN visa covers. Some of these are:
- Surveyors
- Veterinarians
- Soil scientists
- Agronomists
- Urban planners
- Chemists
- Hotel managers
- Geochemists
- Pharmacologists
- Landscape architects
- Geneticists
- Mathematicians, etc.
Remember, it’s not enough to have prior practice in these fields. You will need to provide proof of qualification in your profession. Most professions require a bachelor’s degree as an entry-level requirement. However, in some cases, you may need experience on top of having a relevant baccalaureate degree.
3. A Pre-arranged Employment with a US Company
You can’t apply for a TN visa and look for work afterward. You actually need to have a letter proving that you’ve got a job offer from a US employer to initiate the visa processing. However, the position can be part-time or full-time. For this visa, self-employment does not qualify.
4. The Intended Job Position Requires a NAFTA Professional
Lastly, you not only need to be a NAFTA professional, but also, the role you’re going to fill must actually require a NAFTA professional. So, if you’re an urban planner, for instance, you can only take up a position that needs the skills of an urban planner and nothing else.
An Immigration Attorney Can Help You Navigate the TN Visa Requirements
If you’re a citizen of Mexico or Canada and want to work in the US, a TN Visa is the easiest way to get into the country. That said, you need to have all the requirements and follow the application process to the letter to get approved. So, it’s always best to consult a visa attorney to ensure you don’t make mistakes that could have costly consequences.
